Bluetooth headphones connected but silent?

Check the active output device, headset profile, volume and connection state.

Quick check: Run the related device test and keep it open while trying these steps.

Connection is not the same as output

Windows can report that a headset is connected while sound is still routed to a monitor or other speaker. Open Settings → System → Sound → Output and choose the Bluetooth headphones. Play Center on our speaker test at a low volume. Also check the browser in the Windows volume mixer.

Check headset and computer volume

Some wireless headsets have their own volume control independent of Windows. Raise both gradually. If you use a gaming headset with separate chat and game endpoints, select the intended endpoint in Windows and in the app. A call app may switch to a hands-free profile that sounds different from normal stereo playback.

Refresh the connection

Turn the headphones off and on, then reconnect them in Windows Bluetooth settings. If that fails, remove and pair the device again, ensuring it is not still connected to a nearby phone. Compare the headphones on another device to see whether the silence follows the headset or remains with the PC.

Compare other applications

If our test works but a single game or call is silent, check that app’s output choice or per-app mixer level. If no application plays through the headset, use the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter. The left/right test checks routing only; it cannot measure wireless delay or fix a poor radio connection.

After each change, test the device again. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what helped.
